BG Engineering, a leading subcontractor for precision machined components, has announced it will be the silver sponsor of the 2019 SHU (Sheffield Hallam University) Formula Student Racing Team.
Formula Student (FS) is an educational competition backed by industry and high-profile professionals, with aims to develop enterprising and innovative engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.
Showing its support for the young engineers of the future for a second consecutive year, BG Engineering will work with students to manufacture quality machined components for the team’s race car. The company’s expert engineers will also assist the team members in designing the vehicle and developing their knowledge and capabilities.
Sheffield Hallam University has been involved in the FS competition, run by IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) which culminates at Silverstone in July, in conjunction with Formula One, for six years.
Samuel Seabrooke, Principal of the SHU Racing Team, said: “Formula Student is one of the most beneficial extracurricular activities a student can get involved with. Over the years, team members will build character, competence and core skills that can be applied to industry, giving them a unique advantage over their course peers. Partnering with BG Engineering for a second year, we're extremely excited to be able to work with an enthusiastic company who is passionate in the development of tomorrow's engineers.”
BG Engineering first became involved with the SHU Racing Team after they approached Marie Cooper from BG Engineering in 2018. The company was recommended by another regional engineering firm because of its machining expertise, and has since continued to work closely with the SHU Racing organisers and its team.
Antony Holmes, Managing Director of BG Engineering, said: “We are extremely pleased to be offering our support to the SHU Formula Student race team once again. Having thoroughly enjoyed helping the students gain invaluable experience in a real engineering facility in 2018, this year we have decided to ramp up our involvement by taking on the silver sponsorship. We look forward to working closely with the team and supporting them in building a race car worthy of taking first place on the leader board.”
Over the past 30 years, the company has elevated itself into being one of the leading precision engineers in the region.
BG Engineering prides itself on its approach to quality and inspection. The company is ISO 9001 accredited and is focused on continual improvement by having its own in-house inspection department to ensure that all parts reach the customer ‘right first time.’
The company has also recently secured AS9100 accreditation, the international management system standard for the Aircraft, Space and Defence (AS&D) industry.
The achievement follows a rigorous external audit of BG Engineering’s QMS (Quality Management System) by Lloyds Register of Quality Assurance’s (LRQA) external board to ensure the company adheres to the strict procedures within the scope of the standard.
BG Engineering is a member of a number of aerospace industry bodies including the EEF NDI, Midlands Aerospace and the North West Aerospace Alliance.
Cooper Brown Enterprises (CBE), owned by Marie Cooper and Chris Brown, invested in BG Engineering in 2017. BG Engineering, which is also co-owned by Managing Director, Antony Holmes, then acquired Pentag Gears and Oilfield Equipment in May 2018. In August 2017, CBE also acquired a controlling stake in NiTEC Engineering Ltd and Spire Laboratories.
